Take a look, meanwhile, at what are just some of the most beautiful islands in Sri Lanka.

Pigeon Island

One of the most beautiful islands of Sri Lanka is Pigeon Island, home of the homonymous national park. Located along the east coast, about 1km from the town of Nilaveli, it takes its name from pigeons, which nest here in large numbers. Divided into two parts, one of which is little more than a rocky cliff, this island boasts a spectacular coral reef all to be explored and a rich fauna, among which stand out several species of sharks and turtles.

Katchatheevu

Located between India and Sri Lanka, about 80km from the Sinhalese coast, the island of Katchatheevu has always been disputed between the two nations. Once a refuge for Tamil fishermen and now uninhabited, it is known for hosting the Catholic Shrine of St. Anthony of Padua, built in the early twentieth century. Every year there is a religious festival attended by thousands of pilgrims from India and Sri Lanka who want to send a message of peace and hope.

Island of Velanai

Off the Jaffa peninsula, along the northwestern coast, the island of Velanai is well worth a visit, famous not only for its beautiful beaches but also for its numerous archaeological remains. Among the various sites not to be missed, the temple of Vangalavadi Murugan and that of Mudipilayar stand out.

Neduntheevu

Also known as Delft, a name given to it by the Dutch conquerors, Neduntheevu Island is located in the Palk Strait, north of Sri Lanka. Inhabited by groups of Tamil families, it will win you over with its landscapes ranging from beaches of light sand, surrounded by shallow waters, to palm groves, to papaya and banana plantations.

The best time to discover the islands of Sri Lanka

The best time to travel to the islands of Sri Lanka is the one corresponding to the dry season. Then visit the islands along the west coast between September and March, while, if you want to reach those along the eastern and northern coasts, prefer the months from April to September. In this way, you will avoid not only the monsoons but also the sultry heat and the strong humidity characteristic of this equatorial country.
